Valjean McCarty Hessing

Valjean McCarty Hessing was a Choctaw painter.

At age eleven, Hessing was awarded a scholarship to art classes at Philbrook. At eighteen, whe attended Baylor College in Texas for two years on scholarship. Hessing returned to study with Alexander Hogue at the University of Tulsa. She didn't seriously pursue an art career until 1963.
