BiographyBorn in El Reno, Mrs. Grummer lived there only a short time. At 16, she skipped two grades in high school and enrolled at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. Majoring in English, Spanish and journalism, she gradated magna cum laude.Of her numerous art awards, Mrs. Grummer is proudest of grand award from the American Indian National Exhibition at Philbrook Art Museum in Tulsa in 1979.
Some may characterize her as an "Indian artist," owing more to the popularity of native American paintings than to her descent, which is only one-eighth Potowatomi.
"My work would really be characterized as western art, rather than Indian art,. "But the Indian paintings are so well known. That seems to be what Oklahomans are more interested in. "I just want to bring a viewpoint of both cultures to my work. I'd rather be simply an artist, period, without any labels."
