Peter Shelton, Jr., Hopi Pueblo is widely recognized as a fine artist and an important figure in the history of Hopi art. He and his brother, Henry Shelton, began carving and painting at an early age. Their art teacher was the master Fred Kabotie. They led the way for superfine, one-piece carving.

After honorably serving in the U. S. Army during the Korean War, Peter was a graphic designer in Phoenix. In the 1960s he was a jewelry designer for Hopicrafts with Bernard Dawahoya and Eldon James.

In the 1970s, Peter created a series of finely carved Katsina dolls. He contributed to the development of a more realistic style with greater detail from fluted feathers and deeper textile folds to natural hands and fingernails.
