The Philbrook photography collection is a select and growing department. The recent addition of over 3,000 vintage photographs by 1930s Condé Nast photographer Lusha Nelson complements the existing inventory of Hollywood portraits by George Hurrell. The glamour portrayed in the photography of this era contrasts sharply with the scenes of rural hardship in the Farm Security Administration photographs by Russell Lee and Dorothea Lange. Twentieth-century photography of the American West is also well represented through the black and white photographs of Edward Curtis and Laura Gilpin, while modern and contemporary abstract works are colorfully represented in the works of Thomas Ruff, Louise Lawler, and J.R. Jones.
